Yamey was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1921. He studied law at the University of Cape Town and then at the London School of Economics. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer in South Africa before moving to the United Kingdom in 1952. He taught at the University of London for many years, and he also served as a visiting professor at universities in the United States, Canada, and Australia.
Yamey's research interests were wide-ranging, but he was particularly known for his work on land law and property law. He was a leading expert on the legal and economic aspects of land tenure, and he wrote extensively on the relationship between land ownership and economic development. He also made significant contributions to the study of property law, and he was a pioneer in the field of law and economics.
Yamey was a prolific writer, and he published over 20 books and 100 articles. His most influential works include:
