Early Life and Education
Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was the son of Stephen Armstrong, an auditor, and Viola Armstrong, a homemaker. Armstrong had a passion for aviation from an early age, and he built his first model airplane at the age of six. He also enjoyed reading about aviation and astronomy.
Armstrong attended Purdue University on a Navy scholarship, and he graduated in 1955 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. After graduating from Purdue, Armstrong joined the Navy and served as a pilot during the Korean War.
NASA Career
After the Korean War, Armstrong joined NASA, which was then known as the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). He was one of the first astronauts selected for the Apollo program, and he commanded the Apollo 11 mission, which landed on the moon on July 20, 1969.
Armstrong and his fellow astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, became the first humans to walk on the moon. They spent about two hours outside the lunar module, collecting samples and taking photographs. Armstrong's famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," have become one of the most iconic quotes in history.
Later Life and Legacy
After the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong continued to work for NASA for several years. He served as the Deputy Associate Administrator for Aeronautics, and he helped to develop the Space Shuttle program. Armstrong also served on the National Commission on Space, and he was a member of the board of directors of several companies.
Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife, Carol, and his two sons, Rick and Mark.
Armstrong's legacy is one of courage, determination, and innovation. He was a pioneer in the field of space exploration, and he inspired generations of people to reach for the stars.
Pocket Bios: Neil Armstrong by Al Berenger is a fascinating and inspiring biography of one of the most important figures in the history of space exploration. The book is well-written and engaging, and it provides a wealth of information about Armstrong's life and career. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in space exploration or in the life of Neil Armstrong.
