Early Life and Education

Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was the son of Stephen Armstrong, an auditor, and Viola Armstrong, a homemaker. Armstrong had a passion for aviation from an early age, and he built his first model airplane at the age of six. He also enjoyed reading about aviation and astronomy.

Armstrong attended Purdue University on a Navy scholarship, and he graduated in 1955 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. After graduating from Purdue, Armstrong joined the Navy and served as a pilot during the Korean War.

NASA Career

After the Korean War, Armstrong joined NASA, which was then known as the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). He was one of the first astronauts selected for the Apollo program, and he commanded the Apollo 11 mission, which landed on the moon on July 20, 1969.

Armstrong and his fellow astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, became the first humans to walk on the moon. They spent about two hours outside the lunar module, collecting samples and taking photographs. Later Life and Legacy
