In the annals of World War II, there are countless stories of heroism, sacrifice, and survival. But few are as remarkable as the 500-day odyssey of Private First Class Robert L. Murphy, a young American soldier who fought his way from the beaches of Sicily to the heart of the Reich.

Murphy's journey began on July 10, 1943, when he landed with the 3rd Infantry Division on the beaches of Sicily. He fought his way through the bloody campaign, and then on to Italy, where he participated in the liberation of Rome. In June 1944, he landed on Omaha Beach with the 1st Infantry Division, and fought his way through the hedgerows of Normandy. He survived the Battle of the Bulge, and then fought his way through Germany to the Elbe River, where he met the Soviet Army in April 1945.
