The Squalus was a Gato-class submarine, and it was one of the most advanced submarines in the U.S. Navy at the time. It was equipped with a number of new technologies, including a diesel-electric propulsion system and a diving bell. The diving bell was designed to allow divers to exit the submarine and perform repairs while it was submerged.
